I started having trouble a week ago with the 'XP Antispyware 2011' virus - I tried to remove it following the advice on your site (creating a 'fix.reg' file and installing Malwarebytes) - it apeared to remove a lot of infection but as soon as I connect to the internet the lights on my modem blink indicating it is downloading and the problem comes back.

Here is my HJT log

Hello, and thanks for using the MyAntispyware.com forums...
It appears that spyware and adware has infested your system.

I would like you to download SuperAntiSpyware.
Let the wizard guide you through the install process, and when asked to submit a diagnostic report, please check the tickbox.

1. Once it has been installed, make sure it is up-to-date. (The main screen will show an option to update the definition files.)
2. Next: You'll want to click the "Scan your Computer" button, In the left panel make sure your main hard-drive is checked.
3. Let's start by using the "Quick Scan", then click "Next".
4. After the scan, the results will be presented to you.
5. Click Next (one last time :D ), SAS will automatically quarantine the detected threats.

To make sure this has fully cleaned your system, I would like you to post a fresh HijackThis log after running SuperAntiSpyware.

Your log looks clean... How's your computer?
Were the Tracking Cookies all that SuperAntiSpware removed?

I don't know what all of the files were that were removed but the only description (that had 108 items) was 'adware tracking cookies'.

However, my computer still seems to be playing up as it is redirecting google searches to seemingly random sites (it also opens a new google.com window when I am in google.co.uk) - my modem also looks like it is still downloading stuff when I don't expect it to be.

Ok, let's try something different..

Please download OTL from here.

Code: Select all

    * Save it to your desktop.
    * Double click on the icon on your desktop.
    * Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
    * Push the "Run Scan" button.
    * The scan should take just a few minutes.
    * Two reports will open (OTL.txt and Extra.txt).

Post back with both OTL logs. Post each log in separate post.

This will give me more information about your system then HijackThis.

The new log I had you create revealed a lot more infected items that I can help you fix...
Your computer should run much smother after the fix!

Please re-Run OTL,
Copy, and then paste the following text in "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved/Custom Commands" window (under the yellow bar):
Note: Your desktop may disappear during the clean-up, this is normal and to be expected.

Click the red Moveit! button. When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. Afterwards, Windows restarts, and opens the log generated by the OTM so you can see the results. Save the log to your desktop.

Please post the fresh log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post.
Also, Since I found new malware I would like to analyze the files OTL deleted.
Please navigate to C:\_OTL\MovedFiles\todaysdate\ and zip all files/folders in this directory and e-mail them to trappmanrhett@fastmail.fm Thanks! :D

Next, I suspect that you may have a TDSS infection or a varient of it:

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
Extract its contents to your desktop.
Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
Click the Report button and copy/paste the contents of it into your next reply.

We may end up using "ComboFix" if TDSS killer reveals any infected drivers/services.
TDSS is a serious and hard to remove Trojan!

The OTL log looks like it ran successfully, how is your system running?
Also, the TDSS Killer report looks incomplete, did it find anything malicious/suspicious?

I have e-mailed the OTL removed files as requested.

When I ran TDSS killer it did find an infected file and asked me to reboot the machine. When I did this it froze part way through closing down so I had to do a forced shut down by holding in the 'on' button - maybe that's why the report looks incomplete.

Machine seems to be behaving, time will tell although it now takes a very long time to boot up.

Thanks very much for your help - it has been first class

Thanks for the files, I will be analyzing and submitting them for signature inclusion.
You mentioned slow boot time... Was this after OTL ran, or after TDSSKiller Crashed?

Can you try re-running TDSS Killer in Safe Mode? The file most likely was not removed if a crash occurred.
At Start-up tap F8, then use the arrows to highlight "Safe Mode", then press Enter.

Let me know if that works, but try ComboFix anyways / also:

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix, please delete that version now, as updates are always being made for it.
Download Combofix from here.
A tutorial on how to use it can be found here.

Close any open browsers. Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a log for you.If the log does not automatically open, then it can be found at %systemdrive%\combofix.txt (typically C:\combofix.txt).

If ComboFix will not run, please rename it to myapp.exe and try again!

Post back with combofix log.

I re-ran TDSS Killer in safe mode as requested and it found nothing - I've attached the log for reference.

I ran ComboFix and the log is pasted below. When it began to run it asked me to disable my McAfee antivirus, which I did. During the ComboFix scan it paused, asked me to write down a file name and then it rebooted the machine. On rebooting it must have re-enabled McAfee as, during the subsequent scan, McAfee poppoed up with a message saying it had detected and quarantined a virus - is this a problem?

Here is the log:

Re: Please can you help?

Postby 12056 » Wed Mar 23, 2011 12:57 am

During the ComboFix scan it paused, asked me to write down a file name and then it rebooted the machine. On rebooting it must have re-enabled McAfee as, during the subsequent scan, McAfee poppoed up with a message saying it had detected and quarantined a virus - is this a problem?

What file did it ask you to write down? What was the message?

While using ComboFix it asks that you disable your AV software because some of the tools that it uses to generate the report can be used for malicious purposes or dangerously if used by an inexperienced user.

It hasn't appeared to hinder the log... I'm still reviewing it and will post with follow-up instructions later.
