Potential TDSS Trojan

Postby Bsurrick » Tue Feb 02, 2010 2:18 am

Patrik,

I'm posting a Spyware Removal Forum as you suggested earlier today.

As I mentioned, my computer was infected with smss trojan and Internet Security 2010. Using your instructions I was able to remove Internet Security 2010. Then I used the instructions to get rid of the smss trojan. Following the first step, using HijacThis I checked the indicated codes. Then following the second step I removed the help32.dll. Then ran Malwarebytes and removed 29 infected files. Rebooted and I'm still experiencing problems. (One was the SOUNDMAN.EXE trojan, which I've since removed.) My background is still incorrect and Mozilla is not searching properly. In my post you thought it might be the TDSS trojan.

Tonight I ran Free AVG and removed additional infected items. That did not fix everything and I still can't use Mozilla search properly.

Here is the HijackThis log:

Hello Bart, welcome to the Myantispyware forum.

Looks like your computer also infected with trojan Vundo.
Run HijackThis. Click "Do a system scan only" button.
Now select the following entries by placing a tick in the left hand check box, if still present:
Code: Select all
O21 - SSODL: zobanefeg - {aa5714b2-063b-4215-ac93-dd9bfd8817d2} - c:\windows\system32\huyawuma.dll (file missing)
O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: jugezatag - {aa5714b2-063b-4215-ac93-dd9bfd8817d2} - c:\windows\system32\huyawuma.dll (file missing)

Once you have selected all entries, close all running programs then click once on the "fix checked" button.
Reboot your computer.

Download RootRepeal from here or here and unzip it to your Desktop.
Click on the Report tab, then click on Scan Button.
A Window will open asking what to include in the scan. Check all of the below:
* Drivers
* Files
* Processes
* SSDT
* Stealth Objects
* Hidden Services
Click OK button. Now you'll be asked which drive to scan, check your system drive - disk C by default.
Click OK button again and the scan will start.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient. When the scan has finished, click on Save Report to save a report.

Please download OTL from here.
* Save it to your desktop.
* Double click on the icon on your desktop.
* Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
* Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

* Push the "Run Scan" button.
* The scan should take just a few minutes.
* Two reports will open (OTL.txt and Extra.txt).

Re: Potential TDSS Trojan

Postby Bsurrick » Thu Feb 04, 2010 3:11 pm

Patrik - the previous posts are the logs you asked me to post following the instructions you gave. For what it's worth, my computer is still not fixed after the removal of the two items that were checked during the HijackThis program. I know we are working through this, but wanted to give as much information as possible since we don't have a direct converation and we have to communicate via these posts. Thanks for the continued help on this. Bart

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix, please delete that version now.
Download Combofix from here. Close any open browsers. Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a log for you.If the log does not automatically open, then it can be found at %systemdrive%\combofix.txt (typically C:\combofix.txt).

If ComboFix will not run, please rename it to myapp.exe and try again!

Post back with combofix log.

FYI, the combofix on its own did not fix my problems with being moved to random sites when searching and the other issues.

fix my problems with being moved to random sites when searching and the other issues.

Both browsers (IE and Firefox) are affected ?

Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (MBAM).
Run, perform Quick Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad (save the log to your desktop) and you may be prompted to Restart.

Download GMER Antirootkit from here.
Mirror location: here. This version will download a zip. If you use this mirror, please unzip it to a folder that you create such as C:\Gmer\.

Disconnect from the internet and disable all active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver.
Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. a1afk10a.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
For mirror version, double-click Gmer.exe to run the program.
When the program opens, click the ">>>" Tab
Click the "Rootkit/Malware" Tab.
Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
Click the Scan button.
When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
Paste the clipboard contents into a text file by clicking Edit -> Paste or Ctrl + V
Save the gmer scan log to your desktop.
Close Gmer.

Post back with MBAM log + GMER log.

Hi Patrik. No trouble running the Malwarebytes program. It found nothing. Here is the log.

Can't run GMER completely. Have run it about 5 times and it never completes. Either the computer just turns off or I get the Blue Screen indicating major problems. Will try on more time, but we might have to try something else if it won't complete a scan.

I can't get GMER to run successfully. I've run it several times and get the following results: it runs and then the program shuts down; it runs and the program automatically reboots the computer; it runs and craps out and gives the Blue Screen. Now the computer runs more erratically than before: sometimes I will have to manually shut down, sometimes it will freeze up and not allow me to get to the Task Manager. Please help, we've been battling this for almost 10 days. Thanks.

Disable system restore to flush out infected restore points. Reboot your computer again. Turn on Windows System Restore. After that click START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > SYSTEM RESTORE. click on “create new restore point” > click on NEXT and follow the prompts.

fix my problems with being moved to random sites when searching and the other issues.

Both browsers (IE and Firefox) are affected ?

Please answer me on this question.

Post a fresh RootRepeal log with your answer.

Sorry I didn't answer your question before about the two browsers. I haven't done extensive testing of IE, but it looks like IE is running OK; searches are not being high jacked like they are with Firefox. Doing the rest of your instructions now.
