Virus scan interupted by restart

Postby Deanimation » Tue Jun 05, 2012 12:33 pm

Hi Patrik
I have recently been using the microsoft antivirus - security essentials, but in the last couple of weeks I have not been able to perform one virus scan to completion. Each time it goes so far and then the computer restarts in an instant. I have tried reinstalling the program, running mbam, running advanced system care (free), doing a defrag and deleting alot of unused software all without solving the problem. Any help or advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks - Dean

Alas it would appear that the site admin here are otherwise engaged at present. I sincerely hope that everything is OK in their personal lives as they have certainly made my personal life alot easier in the past with the help that they gave feeely. In particular I hope that Patrik is OK and is otherwise engaged in something he finds worthwhile and fulfilling, I certainly wish him all the very best in health and happiness and hope that his lack of attendance at this forum is because he has something good which takes his time.

On the matter of my virus scan issues, I have found a trick which has cured the problem, at least inasmuch that I can now perform complete and full anti-virus scans. The trick was a simple one as are all the best fixes. All I did was open task manager and terminate ALL non-essential services and processes. Having spent a day learning what all the abbreviations mean in the task manager list I discovered that I was able to "END PROCESS" of roughly 50% of all the things running on my PC! Things such as Fax services, search indexers-hosts-and so forth, update processes which run constantly even if they only ever update once a year - you get the idea. Happily ever since I ended all those wastes of resources not only can I now perform my AV scans regularly but my PC is at least twice as fast as it used to be!!!! Oh happy day. I will try to determine exactly which process it was that caused the AV scan to mess up by allowing one process at a time to run needlessly whilst I perform a scan. It may be though that it was just the sheer weight of processes running that caused the issue. Should I discover a culprit process or file I shall report back just in case anyone else has similar issues. Happy computing people!!! Dean

Sorry for the late reply, I've not heard from the site administrator who is usually actively monitoring the forum.
If you still need assistance, I will be able to help you.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix, please delete that version now.

Download Combofix from here.
Close any open browsers. Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a log for you.
If the log does not automatically open, then it can be found at %systemdrive%\combofix.txt (typically C:\combofix.txt).

If ComboFix will not run, please rename it to myapp.exe and try again!

Post back with combofix log.
